Back to the heart of Modern Homesteading

It’s been a little while since I last posted in this Moments section. And while the updates may have paused in this little corner of the website, life behind the scenes certainly didn’t.

If anything, it got fuller, messier, more creative, and ultimately more joyful.

Like many, the post-lockdown years left me feeling like time had blurred at the edges. Days folded into each other, and while I continued sharing recipes, projects, and seasonal wisdom, I found myself pulled in many directions. A prolific blogger by nature, I suddenly had more ideas than hours in the day and more passions than pages to put them on.

One of the biggest undertakings during that time was writing my first non-fiction book, THE MISSING PIECE: A Woman’s Guide to Understanding, Diagnosing and Living with ADHD, which was released with HarperCollins in early 2024. That process was both deeply personal and creatively expansive. It cracked me open in the best way and reminded me that joy and purpose come from following what lights you up, even if it means stepping back from other things temporarily.

So yes, I’ve been a little quiet here, but only because I’ve been very present elsewhere. I’ve produced 50+ podcast episodes for ADHDifference, returned to professional acting and voice work (a longtime love of mine), while still tending the daily flow of home life: growing, making, preserving, and sharing.

And now? I’m ready to gather the threads.

You might have noticed that this little homesteading corner of the internet is getting a fresh new look. I’ve been busy behind the scenes reworking the layout to make it more welcoming, intuitive, and useful for you. Whether you’re looking to pickle summer cucumbers, mend a worn jumper, or simply slow down and reconnect with a more intentional way of living, I hope you’ll find the site easier to navigate than before.

Modern homesteading is the thread that ties all of this together. It’s not about being off-grid or perfectly sustainable. It’s about reclaiming skills that once lived in our grandparents’ hands: mending, growing, baking, foraging, and weaving them into our own lives in ways that feel possible and meaningful.

Because let’s be honest, the world feels a little overwhelming sometimes. But there’s something deeply grounding about doing things yourself. About learning something new, failing a little, trying again.

So, here’s to being back in this space, with more stories, more ideas, and more ways to rediscover the joy of doing it yourself. I can’t wait to share what’s next.

With muddy boots and a full heart,

This is a beautifully written piece! Homesteading in the Auckland region brings its own unique charm—summer gardens flourishing even in Waitākere’s cooler coastal microclimate, or bees thriving in urban backyards around Mt Eden. There’s something really grounding about growing and making locally, especially here in Tāmaki Makaurau. It’s inspiring to see modern homesteading practices being celebrated.
