🥣 A Bowl a Day. Slow-cooked soup isn’t just comfort food. It’s been the heart of my recent 28kg weight loss journey...and counting.

For nearly a year, I’ve had homemade soup for lunch 7 days a week. Packed with seasonal veg, lean protein, and zero fuss, it’s nourishing, satisfying, and so easy to prep in bulk.

My slow cooker? Works for me!
My stick blender? Yes, a must in a kitchen.
My freezer? Full of veggie-packed portions ready to go.

This isn’t a rigid recipe. It’s a way of eating that fits around seasons, swaps, and what’s growing in the garden. Delicious, frugal, sustainable… and it works. 💚

Preserving a little sunshine in a jar 🌞 These quirky Mad Hatter capsicums were roasted to bring out their natural sweetness, then tucked into a simple brine of salt, vinegar, and oil.

Their quirky shape isn’t the only thing to love. Here’s hoping they taste as good as they look! Can’t wait to crack into them when fresh capsicums are just a memory.

My Jerusalem artichokes are stunning. I must admit, I grow them for their prettiness as much as the food itself. Standing at least 10 feet high, last year they blew down in a storm as they are so lanky, but this year they're standing proud. Also known as sunchoke or 'earth apple' I appreciate the earthiness is an acquired taste! ... and, allegedly they may cause 'tooting' 🤣 but I don't eat them in enough quantities to comment on that! If it's edible, makes my garden pretty, and brings bees, I'm all in!

✨ The Great Bean Glut ✨

Last year, I let the last of my beans grow old and dry on the vine, collected the seeds, and tucked them away for homemade baked beans (which I still haven’t made 😅). This year? It’s a bean bonanza all over again, but I’m determined to stay ahead of the deluge!

For those sneaky beans that grow faster than I can pick and end up too stringy to eat, I’ve found a new solution: depod, pickle, and preserve. My latest experiment? A Mixed Bean Salad Pickle – tangy, crunchy, and ready to add some zip to winter meals. I've thrown some capsicum, onion and a few spices in there for flavour. I'll share the recipe as soon as I've taste-tested it!

It’s so satisfying to turn what might have been waste into something delicious. Have you ever tried pickling beans? Or do you have a go-to way to deal with garden gluts?

I've never seen a Pūriri moth until now ... so big and so beautiful, disguised as a clump of leaves. Apparently the caterpillars live for up to 5 years burrowed in trees. Fascinating fact for a Tuesday morning!

It's been a long time between posts but the garden

It's been a long time between posts but the garden keeps growing! My latest preserving endeavors have been epic and mainly revolving around my dehydrators. Why? Dried food lasts for ages, is compact, and is really addictive to do! I make dried vegetable stock, flavoured salt, lemon pepper, mixed herbs..and this week I'm topping up my powdered greens jar. Busy busy 🥬🥦
