What ADHD Taught me About Gardening: I love growing from seed. Love it. That tiny, hopeful moment where you pop a seed into soil and think this is it, this is potential incarnate. Watching day-by-day growth feels slightly magical. And yes, I get absurdly attached.

I even love the next stage: planting those seedlings into the grown-up garden. The big leagues. The “you’re on your own now, kid” phase.

And that… is where it all goes sideways.

Because once the seedlings are planted out, my interest quietly packs a bag and leaves town. Not out of laziness. Not because I don’t care. Just… ADHD. Twelve weeks until harvest? In ADHD time, that’s a lifetime. Several personalities ago.

Inspired by fellow homesteader Meg @planegardening today's mission was to salvage as many tomatoes as i could find in my jungle, before they split with all this recent heat and rain. Job done. Tomato Salsa on the brew as we speak. This batch will be preserved in glass using hot sterilized jars and lids...well that's the plan. It should make 4 litres I'm thinking. Just in time too, as last season's jars are almost depleted. Thanks Meg for the nudge! #rainingtomatoes #homesteading

There’s something oddly magical about that moment

There’s something oddly magical about that moment of bush-whacking your way through the chaos, half archaeologist, half forager, uncovering what past-you enthusiastically planted and then promptly forgot. The civilised container garden nods politely from the sidelines, while the jungle, slightly feral and entirely unapologetic, just laughs and says, surprise.

Saved seeds, compost seedlings, mystery volunteers, it’s gardening as a lucky dip. You think you know what you’re getting… until you don’t. Yellow tomatoes revealing themselves like an “ohhh, you” moment. Ox-hearts quietly ripening with zero need for attention. And then the inevitable: what on earth are you? (said affectionately, but with suspicion).

And honestly? Scoring well today feels earned. There’s a particular satisfaction in harvesting something you didn’t quite plan, didn’t label, didn’t control, but somehow nurtured anyway. A reminder that not all abundance comes neatly organised. Some of it hides under weeds, waits patiently, and rewards curiosity.

My growing efforts: My biggest and fastest growing

My growing efforts: My biggest and fastest growing pumpkin plant self seeded in the chook run. With all the 'compost' produced daily it's no wonder it's thriving so well. Not a lot of effort on my part, but I'll take the win anyway.

Meanwhile, I've decided to rehome some seeding spuds from under my sink to my worm bin (not to compost down, but to enjoy some extract rich soil). It's an experiment. If I don't see 'em, I forget to back fill 'em, so my latest ploy is to have them close by. I'll keep you posted.

My hot house tomato seedlings, now outside, are producing the first harvest, ripe and ready to eat...which is 8 weeks ahead of last year's crop, so I'm stoked.

And finally, I'm growing some cucumbers in pots this year...and they are hanging on well! A little feeble looking (note to self: make compost soup)!

I have a feeling that it's going to be a busy preserving season ahead and I can't wait! #backyardgardening

Think of Cucumber Sushi as a fresh way to use up the summer glut! The cucumber becomes the “wrap”, which means no rolling mats, no seaweed dramas, and no pressure for perfection.

For this recipe, I’ve kept things beautifully simple with avocado and capsicum (plus the essential sushi rice). But it’s very much a use-what-you-have situation.

If you’ve got leftover teriyaki chicken, use it.
If the fridge offers smoked salmon and cream cheese, go that way.
If the garden is overflowing with carrots and herbs, let them lead.
