Choko season got a little out of control again… so

Choko season got a little out of control again… so it was time to make pickle. 🫙🌿

This recipe works with both fresh and frozen chokos, but one thing is absolutely essential: peel them first. Fiddly? Yes. Worth it? Also yes — unless you enjoy fibrous pickle.

The peeling stage can get hilariously slippery too. My best tip? Hold the choko in a tea towel while using a vegetable peeler, or slice it first and trim the skin away with a knife.

From there it’s all curry, mustard, vinegar, chilli and that glorious chutney smell filling the kitchen.

After many years, my bark garden slowly turned int

After many years, my bark garden slowly turned into something else entirely… rich garden soil hiding above the weed mat. 🌱

So instead of piling fresh bark on top and hoping for the best, we built a homemade “colander” from aviary netting and an old barrel ring to separate the reusable bark from the composted soil beneath.

Messy? Absolutely.
Worth it? Completely.

We worked out we were salvaging around $15 worth of bark per wheelbarrow, while also uncovering inches of incredible soil for new garden beds and compost bays.

It wasn't just the morning's fog that caught my curiosity. This time of year (autumn or after a bit of rain) you'll often see ballooning - beautiful silk-like strands floating aimlessly through the sky. Tiny spiderlings send out these fine threads of silk and let the breeze carry them off somewhere to settle over paddocks and trees (and my lawn). Aww. Welcome to your new home folks!
