Summer was a perfect time to use newly acquired cable drum as an instant bar lean-to, but come winter it was dismantled and upcycled into an under-step storage hide-away.
We enjoyed a few cold beverages around our make-shift bar over summer, however rather than sitting water-logged during our rainy winter months we decided to get creative and upcycle the wood. You could make virtually anything out of the palings, but an under-step storage cupboard was our DIY project for July.
Before….
After….
Here’s our DIY journey:
The cable drum was beginning to get water logged. Usually semi-protected with cable wire, the exposed palings began to soak up lots of water. We waited for a few sunny days, then started to dismantle it!
Once the palings were off and the rusty nails removed, we stacked and dried the wood in the garage for a few weeks. Measuring the gap beneath the front steps we cut palings to measure and attached them to a supporting frame before fitting into place. A quick coat of primer and several layers of exterior paint to seal, an old cupboard door handle and latch —- and voila! One under stair storage hide-away.
