Urban farming is less about land size and more about mindset. You don’t need a lifestyle block to grow food. Whether you live in an apartment, a rental unit, or right in the heart of suburbia, there are creative and meaningful ways to grow where you are.
It’s about finding opportunities in small spaces, building soil in pots and planters, and learning how to make the most of what you have.
In my travels overseas, I’ve been inspired by rooftop gardens, balcony growers, allotments tucked into quiet corners, and thriving community gardens in the middle of busy cities. No matter the location, there’s something powerful about choosing to grow food. It’s a quiet form of resistance, a way to reconnect, and a source of joy and nourishment.
This section is dedicated to ideas and inspiration for growing in urban environments. From container gardening and vertical setups to community garden tips and shared growing spaces, I’ll be exploring ways to make food growing accessible to anyone, anywhere.
Alongside growing, I’ve also written about some incredible food organisations doing essential work rescuing and redistributing surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill. Their efforts highlight how much can be done in urban spaces when community, creativity, and care come together.
You don’t need the perfect conditions to get started. Just a little curiosity, some sunlight, and a reason to grow.
